MEGAN DRENNAN

Australian Artist

Who am I?

Dutch Australian, I was born and raised on the Darling Downs, Queensland. I’ve been drawing and painting animals particularly horses for as long as I can remember. Some of my first memories are drawing ponies as a young girl. During high school, Visual Art was always my favourite class, and I was lucky enough to have some great teachers that really encouraged and guided me.

When I first left school, I studied visual art, but for various reasons I ended up transferring to business. Since then due to time constraints with our business and competing in equestrian events, my art had taken a bit of a back seat until a few years ago after I sustained an injury, which meant I needed to give up riding for a while and I started painting again and it’s the best thing I could have done!!

I’ve rediscovered my love of painting and I’m enjoying it more than ever. I love the feeling of being immersed in the moment when painting. I love seeing a piece emerge as I progress  through my process. I also have a love of sculpture and hoping to have some small pieces available soon.

I find inspiration in rural and equestrian life. I’m lucky to live in a rural area with great views and big skies. I love taking my own reference photos for my paintings and I’m also enjoying some landscape and portrait photography - I’ve featured one of my landscape photos below. Our property attracts a varied abundance of birds – I love how the resident birds come and remind me to put out feed for them. As well as our own horses and poultry – we have obliging neighbours that let me photograph their sheep and cattle. I love seeing what I can create from these photos with my brushes.

Until we meet again.

Pondering before painting is a big part of my artistic process, but I also need time to put new ideas on the ‘back burner’ of my brain. Funnily enough, I find my best ideas often come to me when I’m not thinking about them at all.
